Postcards from Mars

An illustrated story by Little Lantern · Kids · Storybook · All ages · English, German

Also in: Deutsch

A boy in the first Mars colony draws postcards for his grandmother on Earth, and the last postcard brings a surprise.

Leo is nine and lives in the first colony on Mars with his rover friend Pebble. Every week he draws a postcard for Oma Hilde on Earth: giant jumps in low gravity, blue sunsets, a nine-day dust storm, two little moons, and the sunflower he grows from her seeds. Oma pins them all on her kitchen wall, until one day she decides to deliver her answer in person.

Characters

  • Leo (Colony kid): A nine-year-old who lives in the first family colony on Mars and loves to draw.
  • Oma Hilde (Grandmother on Earth): Leo's grandmother, who keeps every postcard on her kitchen wall.
  • Pebble (Rover friend): The colony's small six-wheeled rover, who follows Leo around like a puppy.

Episode 1: Dear Oma

Leo's postcards tell Oma about life on Mars, from giant jumps to the first sunflower, until Oma delivers her answer in person.

Leo draws his first postcard.

Dear Oma, Mars is red, dusty and very, very quiet.

On Earth, Oma pins it to her kitchen wall.

Oma Hilde: Another one from my Leo!

Leo jumps high in the low gravity.

Here I can jump almost three times higher than at home!

The Martian sunset is blue.

Our sunsets are blue, Oma. Yours are red. Funny, right?

Leo plants Oma's sunflower seeds.

Leo: Oma's sunflower seeds. Grow, please!

A dust storm keeps everyone inside.

A dust storm came. We stayed inside for nine days.

Bzzt?

Two little moons and a blue dot.

At night I look for the little blue dot. That's you.

The first sunflower on Mars blooms.

Leo: It bloomed! The first sunflower on Mars!

Oma decides to answer in person.

Oma Hilde: Time I sent him a postcard of my own.

The last postcard arrives in person.

Oma Hilde: Special delivery, Leo!

The last postcard came in person.
