Two Umbrellas

An illustrated story by Paper Comet · Romance · Anime · All ages · English, Turkish

Also in: Türkçe

Two strangers keep swapping identical yellow umbrellas at a rainy ferry stop, and start writing to each other.

Every rainy morning at the Kadıköy pier, Deniz and Emre leave identical yellow umbrellas in the same stand, and one morning they grab the wrong ones. A note tied to the handle starts a week of letters carried back and forth by the umbrellas, watched over by Hasan Amca, the simit seller who sees everything. On Friday, Emre writes: "I'll be the one without an umbrella."

Characters

  • Deniz (Illustrator): A twenty-six-year-old illustrator who commutes by ferry and sketches everyone she sees.
  • Emre (Cellist): A twenty-eight-year-old orchestra cellist who is always slightly late.
  • Hasan Amca (Simit seller): The simit seller at the pier for thirty years, who notices everything.

Episode 1: A Week of Rain

Two umbrellas get swapped, notes start travelling between them, and on Friday the writers finally meet.

Two identical yellow umbrellas in the stand.

Kadıköy, Monday. Rain, again.

In the rush, they grab the wrong umbrellas.

Hasan Amca: Two yellow umbrellas... this will be trouble.

On the ferry, Deniz finds a note tied to the handle.

Deniz: "To whoever has my umbrella: it leaks. Sorry!"

Deniz fixes the umbrella and leaves her own note.

Deniz: Your umbrella leaked. I fixed it. — D.

Emre finds a sketch of a seagull with an umbrella.

Emre: She drew a seagull... holding an umbrella?

A week of notes; Hasan reads along.

All week, the umbrellas carried their letters.

Hasan Amca: Why don't you two just say hello?

Emre's note: Friday, six o'clock.

Deniz: "Friday, 6 pm. I'll be the one without an umbrella."

Friday evening, Emre waits in the rain without an umbrella.

Emre: What if she doesn't come?

Deniz holds her umbrella over him.

Deniz: You really came without an umbrella.

Emre: I hoped someone would share.

They walk off together under one umbrella.

Two umbrellas. One was enough.

Hasan Amca: I'll keep the spare!
